Des Grieux and Lescault, Manon's brother, have followed Manon to Le Havre, where she shares a prison cell with other women prisoners, scheduled to depart on a boat to America to populate the new colonies.

The scene happens at dawn. During the scene, oil lamps will be extinguished, one by one, while Des Grieux and Manon, behind bars, exchange a love duet.
